Puerto Vallarta Remembers Hurricane Kenna

October 22, 2009

Tropical Storm Rick brought back memories of Hurricane Kenna's storm surge that wreaked havoc on Vallarta in October 2002.
For many Puerto Vallarta residents, Wednesday's stormy skies and high seas brought back memories of Hurricane Kenna, whose storm surge wreaked havoc on our town on October 25, 2002. Though no lives were lost, Hurricane Kenna was the first storm to affect Puerto Vallarta in over 60 years, making it an event that Banderas Bay area residents will not soon forget.

Since the Banderas Bay region is known as one of the most protected areas along Mexico's Pacific coastline, many of us did not anticipate the severity of the 2002 storm, which flooded the downtown area and damaged many beachfront homes and restaurants as well as shops and businesses along the Malecón.

Fortunately, Hurricane Rick, which was the strongest storm to hit the eastern north Pacific in more than a decade with winds of 180 mph (290 kph), spent its force far out at sea and lost most of its punch before it headed toward Mexican resort regions as a tropical storm on Tuesday.

Nevertheless, even after Tropical Storm Rick's maximum sustained winds died down to 65 mph, the Banderas Bay coastline was pummeled by high waves and heavy rains on Wednesday, which caused no damage, but was a cause of concern for Puerto Vallarta area residents who remembered the aftermath that came from not being prepared for the consequences brought on by Hurricane Kenna.
