Heliodoro Díaz (PRI), president of the Administration Committee, announced a series of measures to reduce spending in Congress. They will also eliminate breakfasts and lunches for the legislative committees, which will save 35 million pesos.
When asked whether the committee will also eliminate insurance for major medical expenses that legislators have with the ISSSTE, Díaz said that the matter is still being discussed. "We are going to analyze the issue," he said. "I can't announce a decision that the committee has not made yet."
In a meeting between the Political Coordination Group and the Chamber of Deputies board of directors, as well as the presidents of individual committees, Díaz also said that in this legislature they are not thinking about getting golden tiepins like they did in previous legislatures.
He said that they would only get emblems that cost up to 50,000 pesos total.
Díaz, a deputy representing Oaxaca, said his committee would also make an effort to lower legislative spending on plane tickets and travel allowances. "We are reviewing the number of domestic trips that committees can make, that are justifiable and necessary."
He also said there is no money this year to finance the formation of special committees or to pay additional advisors.
He said the budget of the Chamber of Deputies for next year would be decreased, and his committee is making sure that legislative activities will not be affected.
