Mexicans with higher education living in the U.S. total about 491,000 professionals and postgraduates, positioning Mexico in fourth place among the largest countries of origin of the skilled immigrant population in the U.S., according to estimates by [Mexico's] National Population Council (CONAPO).

Twenty percent of these professionals entered the neighboring country after 2000. Unlike the case with the Mexican migrant population in general, six out of ten have become U.S. citizens (65 percent).

The employment rate of these Mexican immigrants with higher education is 97 percent, and they work an average of 42 hours per week; 77 percent have permanent jobs, and they are largely employed in the tertiary sector of the economy (78 percent).

More than half of the Mexicans with higher education, who are employed in the U.S., are not in jobs in line with their levels of education (55 percent).

The inconsistence between schooling and type of work is lower among immigrants with yet higher education, at the masters or doctoral levels. Thus the number of Mexican immigrants with graduate degrees working in management positions or professional activities rises to nearly 63 percent.

The emigration of skilled Mexicans can play a positive role for the country if it is linked to networks that facilitate the transfer of knowledge and technology.
