Federal Government Prepared for New Outbreak of A/H1N1 Suzanne Stephens Waller - Presidencia de la República go to original October 25, 2009
| President Felipe Calderón stresses that despite economic crisis, Mexico will achieve universal health coverage. | | Mexico City - President Felipe Calderón declared that Federal Government is prepared to cope with the outbreak of the A/H1N1 flu virus and urged Mexicans to maintain and reinforce preventive measures.
“Once again, I would like to invite all the workers in the country’s Health Sector to redouble our epidemiological surveillance in order to deal with all the cases that arise in a timely fashion. And I would urge Mexicans in general, even more than doctors, to maintain and reinforce preventive measures," he declared.
During the Doctor’s Day celebration and the Signing of the Agreement on Popular Insurance 32 x 32 Portability, the President also reported that the mortality rate has dropped from .6% to .58%.
Accompanied by Health Secretary José Ángel Córdova Villalobos, the President explained that Mexico will receive 20 million vaccinations against A/H1N1 flu in winter, out of a total of 30 during the winter season.
“With these 30 million doses of vaccination, we will be able to give them to the medical personnel on the battle front against the illness and to the population groups at risk," he said.
During the event at which he awarded the Medical Merit Prize 2009 to Dr. José Ruiloba Benítez, President Calderón announced the purchase of 700 ventilators for critical care and 700 vital sign monitors, representing an investment of 250 million pesos, to cover national demand.
He said that despite the economic and financial adversity, by the end of his administration, the goal of universal health coverage will have been met.
As he witnessed the signing of the Popular Insurance 32x32 Agreement, President Calderón explaine that coverage of this type of medical insurance will now be available to all Mexicans, regardless of their physical location in the country.
“This means that Mexicans will be able to receive the guarantee of service that a social system with universal coverage can provide at any health institution."
