Uruguay Supreme Court Rules Out Dirty War Amnesty Raul O. Garces - Associated Press go to original October 19, 2009
Montevideo, Uruguay — Uruguay's Supreme Court has declared unconstitutional a law that gave amnesty to military officials accused of human rights violations during the nation's dirty war.
The ruling applies only to the case of a young communist who was killed by the military in 1974. But it comes just days before Uruguayans vote Sunday on whether to overturn the amnesty law.
Attorney Jose Errandonea told the AP on Monday that the judges voted 4-1 to declare the law unconstitutional as it applies to the 1974 murder.
The amnesty law was passed in 1986 and reaffirmed in a 1989 plebiscite with 54 percent approval. Polls show the effort to overturn it may not get a majority on Sunday. The court ruling might help guide public opinion against the law.
