Telmex Dominates Call Completion, Mexico Antitrust Agency Says Crayton Harrison - Bloomberg go to original October 27, 2009
Telefonos de Mexico SAB dominates the market for completing phone calls, Mexico’s antitrust agency said, a declaration that gives the government more legal authority to regulate the country’s biggest phone company.
The Federal Competition Commission reached the conclusion in an Oct. 22 meeting, according to a posting today on the agency’s Web site. The commission has already found Telmex dominant in originating and carrying local calls and in leasing so-called dedicated lines to rivals.
The rulings provide a path for Mexico’s telephone regulatory agency, the Federal Telecommunications Commission, to oversee Telmex’s prices and service quality. Regulators are seeking ways to boost competition against Telmex, which controls almost 90 percent of Mexico’s phone lines.
Telmex, controlled by billionaire Carlos Slim, has already said it will contest the earlier antitrust rulings in court. A Telmex spokesman declined to comment on the latest decision.
Telmex fell 27 centavos to 10.92 pesos today in Mexico City trading. The shares have dropped 24 percent this year.
