IV Copa Pacifico Pro Tennis Tournament Futures 15 Update - Results and Friday Semifinal Matches
Bob Cohen - PVNN
The competitors from over a dozen countries began play with the qualifying rounds on Sunday that filled the remaining eight spots after the 18 direct entries were given to the top ranked players to enter, the four wild card berths and the two special acceptance entries for those that completed the field at 32. First round play began on Tuesday and Wednesday and Thursday provided more superb tennis at the Canto Del Sol Tennis Club.
The highlight match was on Thursday on Court #2 was again with 19 year old top seed Vasek Pospisil of Canada and winner of four consecutive tournaments playing 8th seeded Adrien Bossel of Switzerland. As was the same as in the quarterfinals, the top ranked Canadian, who has been on a torrid tournament winning streak, dropped the opening set 7-5. With a still growing body the talented Pospisil had to be feeling some fatigue as he has played every round of the Mexican swing of the ITF Futures and came into Puerto Vallarta looking for his fifth consecutive title.
The Swiss competitor at 23 years of age was seeking a big upset as was Sykut from the U.S. yesterday. Pospisil again showed his resilience in taking the second set 6-3 to level the match and prevailing in the third and deciding set 6-3 to advance to the semifinal round against unseeded Roman Borvanov, a 27 year old player from Maldova.
Maldova defeated unseeded Alfredo Moreno, a qualifier from Mexico who was the lowest ranked player in the tournament at #1720 in the world. The match couldn't have been closer and it was a heartbreaking loss for the Mexican as Maldova won 6-3, 4-6, 7-6. The final set went to a tiebreak, the closest of all possible margins of victory.
In the other two quarterfinal matches, 6th seeded Marcelo Arevalon a 19 year old from El Salvador defeated 19 year old 3rd seed Cesar Ramirez of Mexico in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. Ramirez is one of the younger professionals in Mexico and has a potentially bright future ahead of him if he continues to improve. Last week he lost in Guadalajara to Pospisil in the finals and if Arevalon wins his match today, he might have the chance to face Pospisil in Saturday's final.
The last quarterfinal match was won by Michael Rubin, a 28 year old from the U.S. over Philippe Frayssinoux of France also in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. Rubin, who has yet to face a seeded player, has only dropped one set in the tournament and his play has been superb.
The tournament's doubles championship will be played today, with #2 the seeded Mexican team of Cesar Ramirez and J. Herrera-Eguiluz facing unseeded Roman Borvanov of Maldova and Nima Roshan of Australia. Roshan was a finalist for the doubles title here two years ago. This year he was the 5th seed but was upset in the first round. This year the possibility remains that Borvanov can win both titles.
