Halloween at Nacho Daddy's - Bound to Become an Annual Event? Barbara Sands - PVNN November 04, 2009
| At Nacho Daddy's October 31st Grand Opening/Halloween event, costumes knew virtually no bounds and were of every stripe. | | That Big Blast Halloween night on Basilio Badillo was the opening of Nacho Daddy, a new venue for music and food that bills itself as the "only Mex-Tex restaurant in the world." Let's say maybe someone else has juxtaposed the words in the description, but maybe not.
It was all but impossible to find anyone out of costume for this very lively and well-attended opening night for the spacious new club whose identity focuses on Joe King Carrasco. A self-described Tex-Mex rock entertainer, Joe has been living in Vallarta for the past three years and has played at a number of places in town and up the coast. His local musical trademark focuses on "Tequila Reggae," and it's a very persuasive beat that never fails to bring people out onto the dance floor. Joe really gets 'em moving!
At the Saturday event, costumes knew virtually no bounds and were of every stripe (check out Tom Barrington's-based on a true story). The crowd of mischief makers, miscreants and unusual duos such as the uni-boob ladies who joined up to make quite a pair, poured into the place at 8 and partied till an undisclosed hour.
There were pirates, female cops, a real live hot chile, several Flintstones and some people who appeared to represent root people. A hung-over-looking pumpkin managed to keep his head, and little celebrators - one only five months old costumed as a tiny pumpkin - as well as an angel and a ferocious vampire all managed to hold their own.
Sean Moore and Greta Fuentes-Gouthro have been seeking a site for more than a year, but the hunt and the wait were worth it. This is the ONE! The location is on Basilio Badillo 180, where Boca Bento used to be. It's open, breezy, and has a street bar that's great for a quick one and a large airy room for lunch or dinner. There's a TV room/sport bar and most nights live music.
Joe King Carrasco and the "Mexicubanos," Miguel and Morgan, appear on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights beginning at 8 pm. Joe's shop in the restaurant, presided over by Adriana, has colorful t-shirts, caps, photos, a lot of Joe's music CDs and Joe's recent movie Rancho No Tengo that he directed and stars in.
It's a "trailer trash saga" as Joe describes it, with overtones of Samson & Delilah when Joe (as in real life) lost the dreadlocks that he had spent 12 years letting grow. In the film he lost them to a jealous girlfriend. In real life? Ask Joe. The movie should become a feature of the club; it's a very funny Texas tale filmed in Joe's hill country home near Austin in Llano.
Halloween wasn't a night for dinner - but any day except Tuesday you can drop in for lunch or dinner to check out all the menu has to offer. The choice is constantly expanding and includes about 11 nachos, a lot of US-based dishes such as chalupas, fajitas and chimichangas but also burritos, taco salads, many combo dishes, delicious enchiladas and a luscious tortilla soup
Homeboys from Texas can latch onto a chicken-fried steak or a really great bean-free bowl of chili (emphasis mine)! There are cool desserts including a key lime pie and your every wish for un trago (a drink, Gringo) is at "The Hammer's" command. Just ask for Martillo! She personally supervises the mix of ingredients and can probably come up with a special request if she's on hand.
The phone number for information at Nacho Daddy is (322) 223-0838 also check out the website at NachoDaddyMexico.com. Besides Joe and other musicians, and if he's in the mood, proprietor Sean Moore may sing you some real down-home blues, baby. Go enjoy!
