PRI Vows Big Changes The News go to original November 24, 2009
| | Mexico faces two major challenges, overcoming the economic crisis and reforming the constitution to reestablish economic viability. - Francisco Rojas Gutierrez | | | | The Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, is looking to make profound structural changes to the country once next year's federal budget package is passed, one party leader said over the weekend.
Francisco Rojas Gutierrez, the coordinator in the Chamber of Deputies, asserted that the PRI will create and submit a series of medium- and long- term goals that will focus on strengthening social development in all aspects and reviving Mexico's sinking economy. The political system, he explained, needs major changes, while the domestic market should be revitalized and income ought to be redistributed.
Rojas said the changes should promote job creation and raise the quality of education and healthcare.
The lack of management and aid by the federal government has allowed the economy to spiral out of control, he added, while the fight against poverty should be a commitment with well-defined and measurable goals, not a tool for pandering to certain groups.
"To overcome this, the PRI is conscious of the importance of private investment, but public businesses shouldn't compete with private (ones)," Rojas said.
"Instead, they must provide them with input and guidance, while taking advantage of natural resources to benefit the people in general." Mexico faces two major challenges, he said: overcoming the economic crisis and reforming the constitution to reestablish economic viability.
