Puerto Vallarta Fishing Report: Dec 2009 Captain Juan Pablo Moll - PVNN December 18, 2009
Well it looks like the excellent late fall season is coming to an end. The water has cooled down significantly over the past few weeks and the fishing has been a bit slower than last month, but it’s still great and I expect it to get better.
Tuna - As it is every winter there are lots of smaller tuna but the 200 pound plus tuna have left for the winter. And although there are lots of tuna and both El Banco and Corbeteña the bite has been on and off. Last week we were having more luck in the late afternoon and this week it has been early morning. Yesterday we got three in the morning, two weighing about 60 pounds and we had one weighing about 180 pounds. We have had the most success drifting using live bait (google eye fish), and chumming is also working well.
Marlin - There are also marlin but not many. In total we are only seeing between 3 -4 per week. We’re finding blue marlin at both El Banco and Corbeteña but they’re not easy to find, most weighing between 200 - 500 pounds. We've had the most success trolling live skipjack. I also suspect we’ll start to see some striped marlin showing up before the end of the month.
Sailfish - We are also finding sailfish at Corbeteña, El Banco, and north of Punta de Mita, and considering that the sailfish season is just starting you can expect to see more and more. We are usually releasing 1–3 per day, most weighing between 60–100 pounds. We’ve been most successful using live bait.
Dorado - We are also starting to see a lot more Dorado everywhere. The Dorado season is just beginning and so far it looks like it’s going to be a good one. We’re getting at least 3 a day, and we’ve had a few days with up to 10 hook-ups. Most fish are weighing between 10-40 pounds, and we’ve had the most luck with lures, and live bait.
Wahoo - This week we also found a lot of wahoo at Corbeteña and El Banco. We've had a lot of luck with rapalas and lures. We're usually getting 1-5 per day, most weighing between 30-60 pounds.
Inshore Fishing
There has also been some really good inshore fishing. Although this time of year 99% of my efforts are offshore the few times we've stopped at the point (Punta Mita) on the way in we've had a lot of fun. There's a lot of rooster fish, amberjack, and small pargo.
To sum things up, the fishing conditions are exactly what we expect for this time of year. There is a lot of bait everywhere. The water is cooling but clear. There are a lot of fish at all the spots, even within the bay, and things should pick up over the next month. If you’re planning to fish Puerto Vallarta, this is definitely an exciting time of year.
