| Dozens of tunnels have been found under the U.S.-Mexico border, proving once and for all that Bugs Bunny has gotten out of control in his quest to reach Albuquerque. | | Mexican authorities have uncovered a 300-metre cross-border tunnel and arrested a dozen people working inside, the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) said.
The DEA said the tunnel originates in Tijuana, Mexico and extends into San Diego, with about 260 metres of the shaft in the United States although there is no exit on the US side.
It is about 30 metres deep.
The underground passageway, still incomplete after about two years of construction, featured lighting, electrical and ventilation systems, as well as an elevator, according to authorities.
Mexican officials acted on information provided by the San Diego Tunnel Task Force, which includes DEA, border patrol and immigration agents.
In recent weeks, authorities have found a series of similar tunnels, believed to be used to ferry drugs into the US, the world's biggest consumer of cocaine, Colombian heroin and marijuana.
"As a result of our proactive efforts, we are detecting more and more of these tunnels before they can be finished and put to use by criminal organisations involved in smuggling drugs and other contraband," said border patrol spokesman Michael Carney.
