Unusually Cold Winter Kills Nine in Mexico Press TV go to original January 10, 2010
| Mexican homeless covering themselves with street banners to get warm. | | Nine people have died in Mexico as the cold weather is gripping the North American nation, the country's ministry of health says.
"Since the end of last week, we have had nine deaths caused by the cold across the nation," said Jose Angel Cordova on Saturday, noting the people in northern states are experiencing a particularly harsher condition, since they are not accustomed to freezing cold, AFP reported.
According to Cordova the dead mostly succumbed to hypothermia, while some died because of exposure to carbon monoxide as they tried to keep warm by standing close to fire.
The cold snap forced authorities to close schools in 10 of the country's 32 states, as the temperature dropped to -6.6 C (20 F) in some places and touched -8.5 C (16.7 F) in other parts.
Due to a usually mild weather in winters, most Mexican homes lack central heating systems.
The global cold snap has affected large parts of North America and Europe.
