Mexico Consumer Confidence Rises in December Noel Randewich & Robert Campbell - Reuters go to original January 09, 2010
Mexico City - Mexico's consumer confidence index rose to 80.1 in December from 78.2 in November, the national statistics agency said on Friday, as the country's battered economy began adding jobs and showing signs of stability.
Consumer confidence dropped in Mexico last year as sliding demand for the country's exports hurt employment in the export sector.
The economic recovery in the United States, which takes 80 percent of Mexico's exports, has prompted a modest rebound in employment levels, but Mexican growth is expected to remain weak this year as tax and fuel price hikes drag on growth.
Unemployment fell to 5.26 percent in November, beating forecasts.
In October, Mexican lawmakers approved a new consumption tax that aims to boost government revenue hit hard by the economic downturn and waning oil resources.
