Church Unhappy Over Free Condoms During Holy Week
The News go to original February 23, 2010
The Tamaulipas state Health Secretariat will distribute some 40,000 condoms at tourist destinations during Holy Week, officials say.
Most of the condoms, to be distributed at beach areas in March, is part of an annual measure to curb HIV and other sexually-transmitted infections.
Catholic officials, however, aren’t excited about the giveaway: Ciudad Victoria bishop Antonio González Sánchez said that free condoms will entice youth into having premarital sex. Rather than condoms, the state should promote abstinence, he said.
