The Presidency reports that early today, President Felipe Calderón conducted a second tour of the municipality of Chalco, in the state of Mexico in order to supervise the aid being provided for the population affected by the recent heavy rains and to follow up the actions taken to deal with the floods that occurred in the zone.

President Calderón hailed the Mexican army's continuous work over the past 72 hours to finishing sealing Rìo de la Compañìa, which is essential for rescuing the thousands of flooded homes. He said that this work is expected to be completed tonight or early tomorrow.

The Mexican president said that in order to deal with the population most severely affected by the floods, hostels have been set up to deal with their most pressing needs, while work on cleaning up houses and streets begins.

He added that the Government of the State of Mexico, personnel from the National Water Commission and engineers from the Federal Electricity Commission are working together to assist the population in this municipality as promptly as possible. He said that in conjunction with the state authorities and in the zones where this is feasible, a survey is being conducted of the assets lost in order to provide the necessary assistance for those most in need.

President Calderón was accompanied by Governor of the State of Mexico, Enrique Peña Nieto; Private Secretary of the Presidency, Luis Felipe Bravo Mena and Head of the National Water Commission, José Luis Luege Tamargo.
