President Calderón: Juárez ‘Will be Rebuilt’ The News go to original February 12, 2010
| “We will rebuild Ciudad Juarez” | | Ciudad Juarez – “We will rebuild Ciudad Juarez,” President Calderón said Thursday, not only in material terms but also in attending to problems of social integration and public security.
A police and military presence is not enough to stamp out crime. Complementary social actions in education, health and the restoration of public spaces, are needed, too, he said.
He called on government and police forces “to take a united front against this challenge that we have not overcome.” He said he does not seek to impose a “recipe” from the capital, because if something is rejected it’s because it ignores the voice of Juarenses.
Calderón emphasized that ideas generated here will be “key” to guiding decision-making and called on locals to jointly define an integral strategy against insecurity and violence.
He recognized that this is a “critical moment,” although he also said he was confident that Juarez will be rebuilt, not only in material terms but also in terms of values and respect.
Calderón offered his sincerest apologies to the recently murdered youths’ families, saying that he understands the discomfort that his first declarations on the murders had caused the victims’ families. Calderón arrived more than an hour late to the meeting with parents of the deceased youths.
During his speech, four women, relatives of the victims, turned their back on the podium, and someone shouted, “not one death more.”
