A BanderasNews Brief & Upcoming Events Sylvie Scopazzo - PVNN March 05, 2010
There's always so much going on in Puerto Vallarta and around Banderas Bay, it can be difficult to keep up with it all. So we've put together a brief overview of some of this week's news headlines from local Spanish language publications, and added some upcoming events you won't want to miss.
Solutions for My Neighborhood
On Monday, March 1, 2010, Puerto Vallarta Mayor Salvador Gonzalez Resendiz and his staff paid a visit to the residents of the Ramblases neighborhood. Under a new program called Solutions for My Neighborhood, the new Mayor is listening to the ideas and concerns of the people of Puerto Vallarta.
"This is a great opportunity to have personal contact and direct communication with the Mayor in order to address the problems we have in our neighbourhoods," the residents expressed.
Everyone had their chance to speak their mind, even Manuel de la Rosa, a five-year-old citizen who waited his turn to speak. "I would like to have my playground fixed and the road paved," he requested. The general public was quite pleased and appreciative of the Mayor's personal visit, saying they felt it was time that the politicians came to them instead of being ignored down at City Hall.
30 Cruise Ships to Arrive in March
Tourism, the principal activity for Puerto Vallarta, will see an increase of 30 cruise ships from different parts of the world in the month of March. This is equal to 73 thousand tourists that will enjoy and contribute to the economy of this beautiful city.
Since the beginning of the year 48 cruise ships have embarked in our port; of which nine were doubles, one a triple and one a quadruple; bringing the number of cruise ship tourists who have visited our port in 2010 to approximately 118,988 visitors.
This month, an estimated 64,000 tourists are expected to travel to Puerto Vallarta via cruise ships. Which, when compared to last year, represents an increase of 6 ships and an estimated 13,318 cruise ship passengers. In these economically uncertain times, this is great news for the locals who work in Puerto Vallarta's tourism and service industries.
Vallarta Makes a Move Towards Recycling
Presidents of municipalities that have a population of 50 to 200 thousand inhabitants recently participated in the second meeting for the "2010-2012 Recycling Strategy Plan," led by the Jalisco Secretary of Environment.
The objective of this meeting was to make the new state recycling plan known, as well as to explain the processes, rules and strategies for carrying out such a program. Puerto Vallarta, amongst other municipalities, was singled out for not making enough progress in developing a more functional recycling program, and was encouraged to accelerate their efforts.
As a result, the city of Puerto Vallarta must show an increased effort of at least 40% in developing a more functional recycling program by June, and another 50% increase by the end of the year. If this request is not carried out, sanctions will be applied.
Training and education for recycling at home, as well as collection and drop-off processing plants, are expected to be provided in order to commence this process.
