A BanderasNews Brief & Upcoming Events Sylvie Scopazzo - PVNN March 11, 2010
There's always so much going on in Puerto Vallarta and around Banderas Bay, it can be difficult to keep up with it all. So we've put together a brief overview of some of this week's news headlines from local Spanish language publications, and added some upcoming events you won't want to miss.
Mexico Beats Canada in Women's Beach Vollyball
Olympic players Bibiana Candelas and Mayra Garcia walked away with their second victory during the Bicentennial Beach Festival, which took place in Nuevo Vallarta this past weekend. The players defeated Marie-Andrée Lessard and Annie Martin of Canada by two sets to one. Local to Puerto Vallarta, the Mexican pair started the game losing their first set.
The Canadians put on a strong show with Lessard producing spectacular spikes. By the second set, the Mexican side had to adjust their strategy and responded with equally powerful strikes offsetting the Canadian pair. It was in the third set when in one single play, Bibiana blocked 3 important strikes to take Mexico to victory. "It was an exciting game. Although, I have to say it was difficult to have lost the first set. By the second and third set, the support from the stands motivated us and was fundamental to us winning the game. It felt great to come up with the blocks and to give the fans an exciting game to watch," commented the PanAmerican medalist Bibiana Candelas.
Marie Andrée of Canada, who played against Mayra and Bibiana for the bronze medal in the Rio De Janeiro, Panamerican Games in 2007, confessed her disappointment in losing against the Mexican team. "I don't like losing but obiviously today, Mayra and Bibi game out and played better than us. It's the first International tournament of 2010 and it was a great to play against those two. We are happy to have been invited to this tournament."
The President Attends the Opening of New Golf Course
March 7, President Felipe Calderón attended the opening of a new Golf Course in Litibu, located in Banderas Bay, Nayarit. Accompanied by the Governor, Ney Gonzaléz Sánchez, comments that projects like the new Golf Course, which will be considered top level along with the other courses in Mexico as well as world wide. "It's an activitity that has major potential in our country and will generate a growing economy and employment in the tourism sector."
"We are following a positive road and we will continue to follow this road if we continue to invest in Mexico and if we continue to make Mexico a great place to invest in," expressed the Federal Executive. Also commenting, "We are recuperating an important flow for tourism."
He remembers that exactly one year ago, if all goes well, in 2010 Mexico would experience a growth of one percent. However, "Today the prognostics are showing an economic growth of four percent and some are saying a possible growth of five percent."
The President comments, "We are working hard to bring International Tourism to the state of Nayarit as well as to Mexico as a country. It's not only about promoting and investing in regions with promising futures, it's about making Mexico a respected and appreciated destination in the world of tourism."
Jalisco and Nayarit Join Forces
With President Felipe Calderón present, the Governors of Jalisco State, Emilio Gonzaléz Márquez and Ney Gonzaléz Sánchez of Nayarit State, signed an agreement for the Administration of Metropolitan Funds of Puerto Vallarta - Bahía de Banderas.
The Governor Emilio González considers the agreement as an opportunity to make the State of Jalisco and the State of Nayarit one single entity. He commented, "My goal is to have one destination, one time zone, one public transport system, and one purpose in mind, tourism. This move will allow us to provide the best service for our foreign travellers as well as our Mexican visitors."
The President pointed out that as a team, the Governors are making great efforts towards attracting more visitors with the objective of boosting the economy and generating more employment. "I have confidence that the two Governors will carry out their agreement and in the past where the Ameca River divided the two states, it will now unite them," he said.
