Navy League Charreada a Rousing Success
email this pageprint this pageemail usJerry Lafferty - PVNN
March 26, 2010

The March 20 event was the first of what's hoped to be an annual Charreada put on by the Navy League in Puerto Vallarta.
There were whoops, hollers, and smiles galore at last Saturday's Charreada (rodeo) benefiting the local Navy League council. More than 300 men and women, young and older, including 30 kids from the "Feed the Children" program were in the stands as charros and accompanying performers put on a rousing demonstration of the skills required in the world of professional Charreada.

The 2 hours performance was followed by a delicious Mexican buffet of tacos and all the trimmings, including an outstanding performance of the local Mariachi band "Nuevo Continental." This was the first of what's hoped to be an annual Charreada put on by the Navy League in Puerto Vallarta.

The entire event was donated by a large number of patrons and suppliers, for which the Navy League and the community at-large are immensely grateful. Those to be thanked include the local Jalisco Governor's office under the direction of Jose Maria Ibarria, the Charro Association of Vallarta (Armando Ibarria, President), the Tepic Skirmish Team (female riders), Mariachi Nuevo Continental, Tequila Hacienda Vieja, Coca Cola, Corona, and of course the site of the event - Lienzo Charro Miguel "Prieto" Ibarria in Mojoneras. Due to their generosity, ticket sales revenue will almost entirely be used for the charitable activities of the Navy League.

We hope to see even more people, Mexicans as well as expats, at next year's 2nd Annual Charreada. What better way to get in touch with one of the traditional ways of Mexican culture. Charreada dates back to the colonial period, developing out of the herraderos (brandings) and rodeos (round-ups) of Mexican haciendas. So, don't miss this opportunity next year!

As background, the Navy League is dedicated to welcoming Navy ships from all nations to the friendliest port city in Mexico; painting and repairing schools, orphanages and other non-profit facilities; and running the local Toys for Tots program, among other activities. To join this outstanding civic and charitable organization, call President Bill Clark at (322) 222-3616. All are welcome.

The Puerto Vallarta Navy League provides an opportunity to socialize as well as “give back” to our local community. For more information, visit VallartaNavyLeague.org.
