Foreign affairs secretary Patricia Espinosa
Santiago – Foreign affairs secretary Patricia Espinosa said on Monday she is in support of the creation of the Latin American and Caribbean Community, as the region needs an institution to become stronger against other political blocs.

Interviewed last week during a visit to Chile, where she attended the swearing-in ceremony of President Sebastián Piñera, Espinosa said that this diplomatic project should not be seen as a means to replace other types of relationships with other nations.

The Mexican Secretary, who has been working in international relations for over twenty five years, referred to the argument that says Mexico should choose which countries it wants to work with, and declared that in the era of globalization this concept “is not applicable.

Mexico needs to have “the capacity to act, to be present on the international scene, and to benefit from opportunities in every region of the world and in every sector of activity,” she added.

Considering Mexico’s territorial importance, population size and economic weight, the Foreign affairs secretary said, the country should take responsibility in leading some processes of integration in the region.

As host country of the Rio Group Summit in Cancún this year, Mexico encouraged the creation of the Latin American and Caribbean Community, although the definitive name of the organization has not been decided yet.

“One of the fundamental objectives of Mexico has been to build a vision according to which the decisions of each country need to be respected in the diverse universe Latin America and the Caribbean represent,” Espinosa said.
