Health Secretary Córdova: Mexico Alert on H1N1 Remains Rocío Zayas - The News go to original March 03, 2010
| Mexico's Health Secretary, José Ángel Córdova Villalobos (The News) | | Mexico City – Despite the fact that the H1N1 virus is currently in an endemic stage, the epidemic alert will not be withdrawn in March or April, said Health Secretary, José Ángel Córdova Villalobos on Tuesday.
Nevertheless, the secretary said that the day when the Health Secretariat will withdraw the alert is drawing closer, but they must be prudent and respect the advice of the World Health Organization (WHO).
“The monitoring is underway by all epidemiologic surveillance units. This allows us to keep the propagation of the virus under surveillance. If it is low, we will be able to withdraw the alert. I think that every day we are getting closer to that moment, but we cannot, prudently, withdraw it, as the WHO itself determined we needed to wait,” he said.
He said that during the current vaccination week, which began on Monday, 1.7 million people have received the vaccination against the H1N1 virus. “If we continue like this, we will achieve our goal of administering the vaccination to two thirds of the population.”
Separately, he reported that only 152 people of the 6.7 million that have received the vaccination in the country have experienced after-effects.
In related news, on Feb. 20, Secretary Córdova said during a conference entitled “Advances in Health and Perspectives, 2007-2009,” that the H1N1 virus was stable and the Secretariat might withdraw the epidemic alert in March or April.
