World Bank Approves Three Loans To Mexico Totaling $1.7 Billion Paul Kiernan - Dow Jones go to original March 26, 2010
Mexico City - The World Bank approved three new loans valued at a total of around $1.7 billion for Mexico this week, targeting health care, education and urban transportation.
The largest loan, approved Thursday, amounts to $1.25 billion and will be used for a government project to provide universal health coverage.
Two smaller credits--$100 million for early education in poor communities and $350 million for "greener" urban transportation in several cities--were approved Friday.
As Mexico fell into its worst economic downturn in more than a decade last year, the World Bank has ramped up its financial support, loaning Mexico some $3.4 billion last year.
Before the crisis, the bank had planned to loan $800 million a year in the 2008-2013 period, according to the multilateral lender's Web site.
