There's always so much going on in Puerto Vallarta and around Banderas Bay, it can be difficult to keep up with it all. So we've put together a brief overview of some of this week's news headlines from local Spanish language publications, and added some upcoming events you won't want to miss.
Sayulita Surf Tournament April 17-18
On April 17th and 18, Sayulita will be holding their first Long Board and Stand Up Paddle tournament, sponsored by Reef Check, a non-profit organization that supports up and coming surfers in Mexico. Professional surfer, James Pribram of Eco Warrior Project and well known local surfer, Carlos "Coco" Nogales, will be the guests of honour and ambassadors for this event.
Scott Bass, Ryan Helm, Ángel Salinas y Patricio González are just some of the few professionals that will be participating. Regular surf competitions be held along with a Stand Up Paddle race that begins in Sayulita and will end in San Pancho.
The tournament will allow only 30 competitors and is open to both amateurs and professional surfers. Amateur surfers must be evaluated by the Competiton Committee prior to entering. For more information, click HERE.
Puerto Vallarta Lifeguards Save 3 Lives
Three people close to losing their lives to drowning were rescued by lifeguards on the beaches of Puerto Vallarta during the Semana Santa holidays. The first case occurred at 5:30 pm on Olas Altas Beach in front of the Mar Azul Restaurant. Two swimmers found themselves caught in a strong current and were not able to swim to shore. Lifeguard Gustavo Guijarro Aquino was able to reach one swimmer, while the other swimmer was rescued by a person in a passing boat.
Not long after this incident, a 6 year old boy in the Marina area was caught in a current that pulled him out 8 metres from the shoreline. Lifeguard Cristian Rodríguez Zavala, doing his rounds on a Wave Runner, spotted the boy in trouble and quickly pulled him out of the water to take him back to shore. Once the boy was revived by the other lifeguards on duty, he was returned safely to his parents.
"During Semana Santa, many city folk visit our beaches and are not aware of the strong currents and how dangerous they can be. We are happy that these particular incidents ended with a happy ending," Rodríguez Zavala said.
Crocodiles Sunbathing on Marina Vallarta Golf Course
There have been two separate incidents where people have lost limbs to crocodiles that roam the Marina Vallarta golf course at night. Earlier this week, the Protection Civil team investigating the golf course was met with surprise when they came across a crocodile sunbathing in the exact same spot where a 15 year old boy was recently attacked. Unfortunately, the crocodile was frightened by the noise of transport vehicles and quickly returned to his habitat.
