Commemorating Earth Day on the Rio Cuale
email this pageprint this pageemail usGretchen DeWitt - PVNN
April 27, 2010

In commemoration of Earth Day, 89 adults and children participated in a river clean-up along a two-mile stretch of Puerto Vallarta's Rio Cuale on Sunday, April 18th.
PEACE and Rivera Cuale, the prize-winning eco- friendly development on the river that has involved itself with the community, celebrated Earth Day early on April 18th.

On a warm Sunday morning, 89 adults and children met at Rivera Cuale. Adults were issued gloves, extra-large garbage bags (one for trash and one for recycle) and bottles of water. Twenty-one 12th grade students from the British American School were there as a requirement for Miss Erica's ecology class, as well as five middle school students, who wanted to be part of the project.

Chelsea Peters, a teacher at the American School and an indefatigable animals rescuer, arrived with six students and a group of fellow teachers. Also volunteering were members of the PV Pulse, Rivera Cuale and PEACE teams.

Logo t-shirts in all sizes were handed out to the volunteers before they headed down to the nearby banks of the Rio Cuale. Sadly, the river and its banks are always littered with trash. It all flows into beautiful Banderas Bay and then to the Pacific.

Dozens of bags of trash were collected before a picnic lunch, generously donated by Uncommon Grounds Chill Out Lounge, Red Cabbage and Los Arbolitos was enjoyed by all on the grounds of Rivera Cuale.

Special thanks go to T-shirt Sponsors, Destination: PEACE; Naef Cuisine; Rivera Cuale and Vallarta Adventures. Thank also to the volunteers who came from as far away as Punta de Mita to help, and to Leanne Smith of Rivera Cuale and Nicole Majewski of PEACE for coordinating this successful event.

Postscript - The beaches next to the Malecón now have large bright orange trash cans on them. Although there are recycling receptacles along the Malecón, people leave trash behind when they leave the beaches. The place where there are still no trash cans is on the beach under the Rio Cuale bridge. Picnickers and fishermen leave lots of trash and garbage, especially on the weekends.
