VYC Junior Sailors Win 7 Medals in 2010 National Junior Olympics

Nuevo Vallarta, Nayarit - Every year Mexico has a competition for the top junior athletes from every State. This year the event, called the Olimpiadas Nacional, was held on Lake Chapala 14-18 April. Representing the State of Nayarit, the Vallarta Yacht Club qualified 13 youths from their Junior Program. Seven of the VYC youths won an historic three Gold, Three Silver and one Bronze medals in the overall competition of 125 sailors.

When asked about the event, Vallarta Yacht Club Director, Lori Rossier, indicated: "We are extremely proud of these young sailors and their coach Maria Elena Vivas, who worked very hard over the last 2 years to prepare for this prestigious event. The Vallarta Yacht Club is committed to developing world class sailors through its junior program and making Banderas Bay one of Mexico's premier sailing venues."

Comprising the Nayarit Team and team medalists were:

• Manuel Dussault Gomez - Silver Medalist Laser Men Ages 17-18
• Tarango Victoria Leon de la Vega

• Andrew Patrick McManus Rubi - Gold Medalist Optimist Men Ages 10-11
• Melissa Tamara Medina Vicent - Silver Medalist Optimist Women Ages 12-13
• Paul Alexandro Moreno McCarthy
• Andrea Ortiz Vivas - Bronze Medalist Optimist Women Ages 14-15
• Cristina Ortiz Vivas - Gold Medalist Optimist Women Ages 14-15
• Federico Ortiz Vivas - Silver Medalist Sail Board Men Ages 18-22
• Christopher Sainz Farias
• Adrian Varela Barba
• Juan Bosco Varela Barba

Accompanying the competitors were: Trainers; Maria Elena Vivas Garcia & Joaquin Humberto Bargallo Barocio, Team Leaders; Ana Marie Barba Gonzales & Juan Bosco Varela Martinez and Sport Delegate; Federico Carlos Ortiz Luna.

Due to various Olympic rules, some of our other promising sailors were unable to compete in the competition including Natasha Alexandra Medina Vicent (category limitation) and Ethan Rossier (citizenship).

All boat, equipment and personnel transportation as well as food, lodging and complete uniforms were provided by the Nayarit Juvenile Sports Institute.

The Vallarta Yacht Club (VYC), is a non-profit organization, which was founded in 2002. It began its Junior program in late 2005 with the purchase of 8 Olympic class Optimist sail boats. It is a member of the Mexican Sailing Federation and annually hosts the Mexican Optimist Association qualifying race for the North American and European Championships. The junior program coach, Maria Elena Vivas, was herself a Mexican National ranked Optimist sailor. Although, not much larger than her students; she is an energetic, inspiring and very qualified coach. The VYC Optimist program is available to all youths in the Banderas Bay area (ages 8 - 15).

The Club plans to enlarge its Laser fleet in 2010 which will be available to all youths from ages 14 - 22.
