(AP/Guillermo Arias) | | Tijuana — In one of its largest seizures in the region to date, the Mexican military Wednesday announced the confiscation of nearly 19 tons of marijuana from a warehouse in the eastern Tijuana neighborhood of Buenos Aires.
Eight suspects arrested in connection with the seizure were nearly hidden as they were made to pose behind the stack of 2,053 seized packages at Morelos Military Base near downtown Tijuana.
The suspects ranged in age from 27 to 59, and included three women. Also seized were weapons, ammunition, cash and five vehicles, one with California plates.
The commander of Baja California’s Second Military Zone, Gen. Alfonso Duarte Mugica, told reporters that the military’s marijuana seizures in the region this year total more than 70 tons.
The operation involved both soldiers and the Tijuana Police Department.
