Mobile Phone Chaos Continues

To register a number, cell phone users can check www.renaut.gob.mx for details.
Mexico City – The president of the Federal Commission of Telecommunications (Cofetel), Héctor Osuna, acknowledged yesterday that the method used to register mobile phones with the National Mobile Phone User Registry (Renaut) does not differentiate between correct and wrong information.

Osuna said that thousands of phone numbers were registered in the name of different public officials and former presidents, including Vicente Fox, Fernando Gómez and Felipe Calderón.

In this context, Osuna declared that Cofetel would verify the information submitted to Renaut with the help of the National Population Registry (Renapo), in order to eliminate incorrect data.

Osuna said that those who registered with Renaut before Saturday at 11:59 p.m. should not see their telephone lines cancelled or suspended. However, he announced that the massive disconnection of unregistered lines would start Wednesday.

According to recent reports, 58.3 million lines were registered with Renaut before the deadline and 24.7 million people abstained from signing with the Registry.

Of those 24.7 million cell phones that are not registered, approximately 6 million are pending because the registers are still being processed.

On Saturday, the systems of Renaut and phone carriers were saturated, which is why all the cell phones that were registered by 11:59 p.m. that day are pending but their service will not be suspended, says Cofetel.

The processing of all those cell phones began on Sunday and is expected to be finished this week but it all depends on the capacity of the Renaut servers.

Cofetel also said that even though they do not know the exact number of cell phones suspended by carriers, this information has already been requested and it is estimated that it will be released within the next couple of days. Lastly, Cofetel said that users who did not register their cell phone by the established deadline can visit the customer service center of their providers to register because the aim is to prevent suspensions.

Mobile phone users were required to submit their name, address and Individual Population Registration Code (CURP). Foreigners were instructed to take their passport to their service provider.
