Mexico's Mobile Registry ‘Prevents Crime’ Víctor Mayén - The News go to original April 08, 2010
Mexico City – The National Register of Cell Phone Users (RENAUT) is functional and fulfills its purpose of stopping crimes such as extortion and kidnappings, says the Federal Telecommunications Commission (Cofetel).
The Cofetel, the Interior Secretary (Segob) and the Transportation and Communications Secretariat (SCT) are in charge of the registry. Their aim is to guarantee the security of all cell phone users by stopping the numbers from being used to commit crimes.
The law cannot be flexible and Cofetel will make sure that all carriers suspend the cell phone lines of those who do not register by Saturday April 10, when the deadline expires, Héctor Osuna Jaime, head of the Cofetel, said on Wednesday.
“I believe the information has been widely spread because phone carriers were responsible for it. Everybody knows about this, it is not hard to do. At this stage the number of people who are unaware of this is very small. The most efficient diffusion was made by phone carriers, who sent text messages to all users, therefore, no one can say they were not informed about this,” he said.
To this date, 65 percent of cell phone users in the country have registered with RENAUT, meaning that of 83 million cell phones in Mexico, 54 million are already registered but there are still 29 million left to register, according to Cofetel.
To register a number, cell phone users can check www.renaut.gob.mx for details. A CURP (similar to a social security number) is required, even for foreigners, but expats can apply for a CURP at National Population Registry offices, according to Segob’s website.
