Chicago – National Action Party (PAN) and Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) lawmakers say they will submit bills to Congress that will guarantee the political participation of Mexicans living in the United States.

Deputies held a meeting with over 200 representatives of Mexicans who live in the Midwest of the United States to analyze their political rights.

Josefina Vázquez Mota, PAN coordinator in the Chamber of Deputies, PAN deputies Carlos Pérez Cuevas, Norma Salazar and Noemí Reynoso, and Javier Guerra, PRI executive secretary, said Sunday that they would address this matter during the current period of sessions.

They also said that the bills proposed by both parties state that in 2012 Mexican immigrants should have “voice, vote and photo,” because the term of the current legislative body will end that year and the presidential elections will also take place.

The PAN has proposed reforms to the Electoral Procedures Federal Code (COFIPE). The PRI has proposed the creation of a sixth constituency that would represent Mexicans who live abroad. Deputies of both parties agreed that it would be best to submit one single bill that would combine elements of both proposals.

Dep. Vázquez said that the National Mayors Commission (CONAGO) has already approved both proposals. She urged all deputies and IFE members to become involved in the reform.

“There are lawmakers who are unaware of the reality immigrants live in. What is not known is not understood. They must hear from the immigrants’ voices the reality,” she said.

Separately, Reynoso said that the initiative proposes the establishment of Electoral Federal Institute (IFE) modules abroad.

Jorge Arana, PRI deputy, said that the collaboration of both parties is proof that they intend to address the need of the community abroad so they feel like Mexican citizens.
