(Reuters/Jim Young) | | Washington – Mexico will join other countries in promoting efforts to limit nuclear proliferation and prevent nuclear terrorism, officials said Monday.
President Felipe Calderón is attending the nuclear security summit in Washington, D.C., which began Monday. He is accompanied by Energy Secretary Georgina Kessel, Foreign Relations Secretary Patricia Espinosa and National Research and Security Center (CISEN) director Guillermo Valdés.
The talks, which include 47 countries, are a centerpiece of President Barack Obama’s broader agenda for ridding the world of nuclear weapons, a long-term process that he says should include gradual disarmament by the nuclear powers, stronger steps to head off a nuclear arms race and more urgent action to lock down tons of plutonium and highly enriched uranium that are the key building blocks of atomic weapons, the Associated Press reported.
