Mexico Economy Recovers Quickly The News go to original April 05, 2010
Mexico City – The Mexican economy is recovering very quickly from last year’s sharp downswing and is already shows signs of recovery, said Alicia Bárcena, the executive secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (Cepal).
In an interview at the Mexico City’s international seminar, “Industrial Policy and Development,” she said Thursday that the Cepal expects this year’s growth to be between 3.5 and 4.0 percent, but a new forecast will be released in June.
“It’s true that Mexico is recovering very quickly after a fall of 6.5 percent, and there is talk of an increase of 3.5 to 4.0 percent. The economic recovery that is expected to happen is very important,” Bárcena said.
She said that the review that the agency is going to release this summer will be based on the behavior of Mexico’s economy during the last quarter of 2009 and first quarter of this year.
“Yes there are signs of recovery ... there is a significant increase in industry, especially in manufacturing, which is also closely linked to the same U.S. recovery,” Bárcena said.
She added that one very important sector that is going to revive is the auto industry. “I think it will be a powerful stimulant.”
On whether Mexican officials’ forecasts for up to 5 percent growth this year is too optimistic, Bárcena said that the Cepal will have to analyze the data on what they based this estimate.
