Pascual: Presidents Working on Immigration Solution The News go to original May 12, 2010
| U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Carlos Pascual | | Cuautitlán Izcalli – The U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, Carlos Pascual, on Tuesday denied the existence of any diplomatic tension between Mexican President Felipe Calderón and U.S. President Barack Obama as a result of Arizona’s latest anti-immigration law, also known as the SB 1070 Law, which criminalizes immigrants without proper documentation.
“There is no problem whatsoever between the federal governments of the United States and Mexico, or between President Calderón and President Obama.
In fact, I believe that both of them share the same point of view (regarding Arizona’s law),” Pascual said after the re-opening ceremony of Ford’s Cuautitlán Plant in the State of Mexico.
“We must do everything we can and analyze the law in order to see whether or not it can be legally challenged,” the U.S. diplomat said. Even Obama has said that the SB 1070 legislation was unfair, Pascual added.
Pascual insisted that on this particular issue, the two presidents did not diverge in opinion: “it is quite the contrary,” he said, “they are working together to propose a comprehensive migratory reform in the United States.”
Regarding security, Pascual acknowledged the advances made by the Mexican government in combatting organized crime, although he also argued that the situation “cannot change overnight.”
Training police officers and strengthening institutions will be a long process, Pascual said. “And the organization of a stronger, more efficient federal police force, as well as an improved judicial system, too,” Pascual said.
