Stewart A. Alexander for California Governor Peace and Freedom Party 2010
In 1977, while working as a grocery clerk for Safeway Stores, Stewart Alexander enrolled in Contractors License School in Los Angeles to prepare for the California State Exam to become a licensed contractor. After passing the California State Exam and receiving his General Contractor’s license in 1978, Alexander found an abundance of work repairing homes for families that were low income that had received government loans to perform repairs on their properties. Alexander says, “These government programs were good for my construction business, and the loans were good for many working families.”

Today, Stewart Alexander is a Candidate for California Governor and he says a key element of his job creation program is to create jobs for construction workers; performing home improvement and repairs. Similar to the work that Alexander did in the 70s and 80s, working families, seniors and the disabled would be able to apply for low interest loans for home improvements, repairing plumbing, roofing, concrete work, painting, fencing, heating and air conditioning, and electrical, having licensed contractors performing the repairs employing laborers at union scale wages.

In 2008, while running as a Candidate for Vice President for Socialist Party USA, Stewart Alexander said federal assistance was necessary to revive the construction industry and the US economy. At that time, Alexander said it was necessary for Congress to establish a $1 trillion fund to make low interest loans available for home improvements; it was introduced as a nationwide program, designed for local and state governments. Instead, the Obama administration has received more than $1 trillion that has only increased the profits for Wall Street.

Under Alexander’s plan, homeowners would be able to borrow $10,000 to $50,000 for home improvements. This would be a federal program with funds being administered by state and local governments. Alexander says his home improvement program will help energize the building and construction industry in California and other states. Alexander estimates by 2013, this program will create thousands of good paying jobs in the building and construction industry and related services.
