Boy's Bottled Message Found 125 Miles Away UPI go to original June 16, 2010
Scottsdale, Ariz. - An Arizona boy who dropped a message in a bottle into the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Mexico said the bottle was found a year later by a science team.
Jack Johnson, 12, of Scottsdale, said he dropped the bottle containing a note with his name, phone number and address into the ocean near Puerto Vallarta in October 2008, The (Phoenix) Arizona Republic reported Tuesday.
Johnson said he received a letter in March from scientist Peter Schaaf, who explained he and his students discovered the bottle Jan. 30 while performing ecological mapping and sampling on the uninhabited Isla Maria Magdalena, about 125 miles north of Puerto Vallarta.
"The distance that the bottle traveled before getting to the island was so long," Jack said. "What are the odds of the bottle being washed up on a deserted island and still being found?"
The boy said he has been keeping in touch with Schaaf via email.
