| Albatross Bridge, in Lázaro Cárdenas, Michoacán, required nearly 700 million pesos in investment. (Presidencia de la República) | | President Felipe Calderón inaugurated Albatross Bridge, a drawbridge that required an investment of nearly 700 million pesos, thereby becoming the most important bridge in Latin America, which will significantly boost the competitiveness of Lázaro Cárdenas Port in Michoacán.
“Albatross Bridge is already a drawbridge. It will be the most important one of its kind, not only in Mexico but also in Latin America,” said the president.
He explained that the bridge is 2.5 kilometers long, with a 60 meter space in the middle that lifts to merge the naval flow with the traffic flow.
“It is 16 meters wide with four lanes and will provide direct access to the port for the 21st Century Highway, which will spare the city of Lázaro Cárdenas an enormous amount of traffic and cargo transport, which is obviously a nuisance for its inhabitants,” he explained.
He said that this will not only help trade, the port and the efficiency of our economy but also solve the serious traffic problem affecting Lázaro Cárdenas.
He reported that during this administration, Federal Government is investing over 2.2 billion pesos in the port. “In other words, we are building one of the best, if not the best and most efficient ports in Mexico, which will now compete with Veracruz, which will benefit Michoacán and Mexico," added President Calderón.
The point is, he said, "That we are going to consolidate Lázaro as a strategic point for trade, not only within Mexico, but also between Asia and the Pacific and Mexico and the United States and even with Europe.
At the same time, he said that his government is heavily promoting infrastructure. “Whatever federal government may have done right or wrong, one thing we are doing is to heavily promote infrastructure,” he said.
He said that in three years, over twice the amount of infrastructure has been produced as during the period between 1994 and 2000 and that we have already produced 20% more than we did during the previous six years.
“I said this would be the government of infrastructure, which it has been. We are fulfilling our promise. Here in Michoacán, apart from the over 2 billion pesos we invested in Lázaro Cárdenas and the port, this year we will pledge another 2 billion pesos more for the state for highways alone,” said President Felipe Calderón.
