Mexico City - The Mexican government may ask British oil giant BP for $20 million to monitor oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, an official said.

The funds will be used to equip 26 environmental study centres and train personnel, Environment Secretary Juan Rafael Elvira Quesada told EFE on Wednesday.

Several government agencies will participate in the initiative.

Elvira said the government will monitor, supervise, inspect and train personnel to lessen the impact in case the spilled oil reaches the Mexican waters.

He said it is still possible to prevent the oil from hitting the Mexican coast but a system is needed to determine whether it has already reached the surface water.
