Mexico's Walmex May Same-Store Sales Up 5.4 Pct Cyntia Barrera Diaz - Reuters go to original June 08, 2010
Mexico City - Leading Mexican retailer Wal-Mart de Mexico said on Monday its same-store sales rose 5.4 percent in May from a year earlier, in line with analysts' expectations.
Same-store sales, recorded at units that have been open for at least 12 months, are used as a performance reference by many analysts. Walmex owns supermarkets, restaurant chains and clothing stores.
Walmex traffic in May rose 6.1 percent from the same month in 2009, reflecting the success of its low-price promotions as competition increases with other retailers, particularly Soriana.
But clients purchased 0.7 percent less on every visit than a year ago, showing signs of a still weak economic environment following Mexico's worst recession in decades.
Walmex shares ended off 0.18 percent at 27.78 pesos on Monday shortly before sales results were disclosed.
