(Xinhua/Reuters) | | Mexico declared Thursday a state of natural disaster in 22 cities in northern Nuevo Leon state and one city in southern Chiapas state in the aftermath of Hurricane Alex.
This declaration will allow the 22 cities in Nuevo Leon to receive emergency reconstruction funds from the Natural Disaster Fund (Fonden), the interior ministry said in a statement published in the Official Federation Gazette. Suchiate, a city in Chiapas bordering Guatemala, will also be a recipient of the Fonden as part of the disaster declaration.
The central government will help with reconstruction work after heavy rains and strong winds wreaked havoc in the disaster areas from June 29 to July 2, it added.
Hurricane Alex came ashore on June 30 in Tamaulipas, Nuevo Leon's neighboring state, dumping most of its rains on Nuevo Leon state, where ensuing floods killed 17 people.
The storm killed a total of 27 people across Mexico and 10 people in Central America, which was in the storm's path to Mexico.
