Mexican Gunfire Crosses Border into Texas UPI go to original July 02, 2010
El Paso, Texas - U.S. Border Patrol agents in Texas said the seven gunshots from Juarez, Mexico, that struck El Paso City Hall were unusual, but shots can often be heard.
Border Patrol agents stationed along the Rio Grande said they can often hear gunshots from violence-torn Juarez, but it is unusual for bullets to hit across the border, the El Paso Times reported Thursday.
"Typically, agents hear gunshots south of the border but as far as an incident like this (City Hall shooting) - no," Border Patrol spokesman Agent Ramiro Cordero said.
El Paso police said the seven shots that struck City Hall were believed to be from the Tuesday shooting of a Mexican federal police officer near the Rio Grande in Juarez.
Officials said El Paso was peppered with gunfire from Juarez during the Mexican Revolution about 100 years ago.
"It's interesting because I think there are some interesting parallels between the Mexican Revolution and El Paso's involvement and interest in what was happening in Juarez at that time," El Paso city Rep. Beto O'Rourke said.
