Mexico's finance ministry will offer a series of grants and loans to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) affected by Hurricane Alex, it said on Tuesday.

A business could receive grants up to 15,000 pesos (1,181 U.S. dollars) and loans up to 250,000 pesos (19,680 dollars), it said. There are 2,500 affected businesses in the state of Nuevo Leon, 500 in Tamaulipas and more than 700 in Coahuila.

Hurricane Alex struck Tamaulipas on June 30 as a category 2 storm, and dumped most of its rains on Nuevo Leon, killing 17 people. In total, the storm killed 27 people in Mexico and 10 others in Nicaragua, Guatemala and El Salvador, which were in the storm's route to Mexico.

Also on Tuesday, Tamaulipas Governor Eugenio Hernandez said a total of 12,000 hectares of corn had been destroyed by the hurricane and subsequent floodings, along with 30,000 hectares of citrus crops. Six people died in the state with two others injured while 30 of its 43 towns were seriously damaged. Some 3,000 people live in emergency shelters with 650,000 lacking drinking water and 350,000 without access to normal communication.
