Source Says Bar Explosion an 'Isolated Incident' PVNN August 26, 2010
| According to the Agence France-Presse, a man was detained under suspicion of bringing an explosive device into the bar. | | Puerto Vallarta - According to a confidential source at City Hall, the explosion that injured 20 patrons at the Pink Cheladas Bar at midnight on Thursday was an "isolated incident."
In a statement to the police, bar owner Juan Carlos Garcia, who was released this morning after being detained shortly after the explosion occurred, said that he noticed some young men playing with what appeared to be a grenade, but thought it was a toy and did not believe that it presented any danger to the more than 100 people that were in his establishment at the time.
Reports indicate that out of the 20 individuals who were injured, the most serious wounds were inflicted upon those who were playing with the grenade. Other injuries were less severe, caused by flying shrapnel.
The Pink Chelada is just one of the bars on Avenida Francisco Villa that local authorities have under investigation as it is reportedly a known gathering place for young drug dealers and gang members. City authorities are in the process of closing down several other bars in the area that are known drug hang-outs. These bars will not be permitted to reopen until they have complied to stiff security regulations to ensure the safety of patrons.
