No-One Can Ignore the Fight for Security: Calderón Suzanne Stephens Waller - Presidencia de la República go to original August 04, 2010
| During the Dialogue for Security, the President said that we must combine all our skills and efforts to reinforce and improve the National Security Strategy. | | Mexico City - President Felipe Calderón declared that there is an urgent need to act together to eliminate the scope for all forms of crime. That is why, he repeated, now is the time for unity between all Mexicans to cope with a common problem.
“Today, more than ever, the fight for Mexicans’ security is a cause that no-one can ignore. We must overlook our differences and place Mexico’s interest above any other consideration," he said.
During the Dialogue for Security: Towards a State Policy, which involved representatives of the academic sector and experts on the issue, the President said that we must combine all our skills and efforts to reinforce and improve the National Security Strategy.
"Society, as we know, demands results in this area, which cannot be the result of improvisation or chance.
As opinion leaders, you have been and are key actors in the consolidation of our democracy and have stood out as a result of your commitment to securing and improving it.
That is why I appreciate your desire to continue contributing from your sphere of action, to fighting the scourge of insecurity and crime that is threatening our society,” he said.
He also highlighted the importance of strengthening the institutions responsible for security and justice in order to deal with crime more efficiently.
“This reinforcement cannot be restricted to the Federal sphere but, on the contrary, must be expanded and speeded up within the orders of local government," he explained.
President Calderón said that in order for this exercise in dialogue to be successful, academics and specialists in security should participate in the events for analysis and assessment that will be arranged by civil society organizations, through the Interior Secretariat
"Your impartial position, which is unconnected to any party interest guarantees that this civic exercise will promote important, objective information to reinforce institutions," he said.
Tomorrow this dialogue on security will involve the participation of religious leaders who will explain their proposals to fight crime and strengthen the security strategy.
