President Condemns Events that Claimed 72 Lives Suzanne Stephens Waller - Presidencia de la República go to original August 26, 2010
The Presidency reports that President Felipe Calderón forcefully condemned the events that claimed the lives of 72 persons, presumably migrants, in the state of Tamaulipas.
He also expressed his condolences and solidarity with the family of the Mexican naval officer who gave his life in the call of duty, as well as with the relatives of the 72 victims.
These recent events occurred within the context of a violent conflict between the Gulf cartel and the Los Zetas criminal gang. They are resorting to the extortion and abduction of migrants as a financing and recruitment mechanism, since they are experiencing difficulty obtaining material and human resources. This is the result of the state's activities, which have significantly weakened criminal groups' operating capacity.
As reported earlier, the location of the 72 persons who died was the result of operations carried out by the Mexican Naval Secretariat in the vicinity of San Fernando, Tamaulipas.
The victims' nationality has yet to be confirmed, as a result of which the Foreign Affairs Secretariat has contacted the embassies and consulates of El Salvador, Honduras, Ecuador and Brazil to enable them to collaborate with the Attorney General's office and other authorities to identify the victims and determine their place of origin.
Federal Government will continue to report on events during the course of the investigations and confirmed its commitment to citizens’ safety and the fight against organized crime.
