Address by Mexican President Felipe Calderón as Part of His 4th State of the Union President Felipe Calderón - Presidencia de la República go to original August 26, 2010
National Palace - This year we are celebrating a very special, unique date for Mexicans, the Bicentenary of Independence and the Centenary of the Revolution.
That is why I am here today, at the National Palace, facing the murals of the great Diego Rivera, to tell you how, together, society and government are strengthening Mexico in order to create more and better opportunities for everyone.
I think that a good way of celebrating Mexico is to provide health services for all Mexicans.
Which is why I want to talk about the Popular Insurance scheme today. Because there is nothing more painful than having those we love be ill or have an accident and worse still, not being able to afford medicine, hospitals and doctors and having to spend all your assets trying to deal with the situation.
Because, as the saying goes: health comes first. Because health also comes first for my government.
Four years ago, I pledged to achieve universal health coverage, in other words, a doctor, medicine and treatment for any Mexican that required it.
As a parent, I know that it is very important to have a doctor to take your children to, and to have a nearby hospital or clinic that works and most importantly, to receive warm, quality service.
At the start of my administration, there were fewer than 16 million Mexicans with Popular Insurance. Now, over 37 million Mexicans are enrolled in the Popular Insurance Scheme and are able to look after their health and assets.
If we include all the people that have some form of medical insurance today, such as Social Security, the ISSSTE and Popular Insurance, we have achieved coverage for over 90 million Mexicans and will continue working until we achieve universal coverage, in other words, health services for all, with no exceptions.
The Popular Insurance Scheme guarantees that all parents will be able to deal with illness, either their own or that of their children, without having to lose all their assets.
I would also like to add that we have built or expanded over 1,800 clinics throughout the country, more than ever before in Mexico, to bring them closer to you and make universal health coverage a reality.
Where health is concerned, Mexico knows exactly where it is heading.
Thank you for your attention.
