Clergy Lawsuit Targets Dioceses in LA, Mexico Associated Press go to original August 05, 2010
Los Angeles — A 34-year-old man who alleges he was molested by a Mexican priest more than 20 years ago in Los Angeles is suing the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles and the cardinal of Mexico City.
The plaintiff filed the lawsuit Thursday in Los Angeles.
The man alleges the Rev. Nicholas Aguilar Rivera molested him when he was an altar boy in Los Angeles in 1987.
Aguilar Rivera, a visiting priest from the Diocese of Tehuacan, fled to Mexico after the boy's parents contacted church officials. He remains at large and is wanted on 19 felony counts.
The lawsuit is the latest of several to target church officials over the handling of the priest.
Los Angeles archdiocese spokesman Tod Tamberg says there is nothing new in the lawsuit.
A Mexican church official says it's a "publicity scheme."
