President Calls for Quality Education to be Strengthened Suzanne Stephens Waller - Presidencia de la República go to original September 23, 2010
| (Presidencia de la República) | | Mexico City - President Felipe Calderón led an event to restore the Public Education Secretariat (SEP) premises. He placed a time capsule there which will be opened in 50 years and contains various materials and messages for future generations.
The President, accompanied by Public Education Secretary Alonso Lujambio and President of the National Council for Culture and the Arts, Consuelo Sáizar, urged all Mexicans to restore and strengthen quality education in the country.
"I think that we should also restore national education, which is our main aim. We must improve its quality while continuing to expand coverage." He also congratulated the National University of Mexico on its centenary, celebrated yesterday.
“Today also marks 100 years since the founding of the National University of Mexico. I therefore congratulate our university, which is the most important educational, cultural and even social project of the 20th century in our country,” he said.
Restoration of SEP premises: 1989-2010Between 1989 and 1991, a project was carried out to restore the facades of the Public Education Secretariat premises, which also included the restructuring of the building.
It was not until President Felipe Calderón’s administration, however, that it was decided to continue with the restoration of the building, which began in 2009 and was completed this year which marks Independence Bicentennial and the Revolution Centennial.
Interest is restoring the building reflects the need to preserve architectural heritage for the enjoyment of future generations, especially since the building has valuable artistic works by the finest 20th century and contemporary muralists.
The intervention process was complex and used state of the art restoration techniques to ensure professional results. The heterogeneity of the complex and the architectural particularities of each building were respected.
During the work, the murals decorating the building were protected at all times by restorers from the National Institute of Fine Arts.
In addition to the restoration of the building, the SEP collaborated with Mexico City authorities and the residents of Plaza de Santo Domingo in restoring one of the city’s signature buildings.
The restoration, which began in December 2009 and ended in September 2010, involved 500 workers, 30 specialists and 30 qualified technicians who directed each of the areas.
On completion of the work for the Bicentennial 2010 project, the Public Education Secretariat recovered its architectural splendor and will continue to be the people’s main education center, which contains a significant portion of the country’s cultural heritage, which all Mexicans will be able to enjoy.
