President Calderón Commemorates UNAM Centenary Suzanne Stephens Waller - Presidencia de la República go to original September 22, 2010
| President Calderón (C) attended the inauguration to mark the centenary of the National University of Mexico. | | Mexico City - President Calderón attended the inauguration of the exhibition: University Time, at the Antiguo Colegio de San Ildefonso, in Mexico City to mark the centenary of the National University of Mexico.
The President was accompanied by his wife, Margarita Zavala; Secretary of Public Education, Alonso Lujambio; Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources, Juan Rafael Elvira; Secretary of Communication and Transport, Juan Molinar Horcasitas and President of the Council for Culture and the Arts, Consuelo Sáizar.
The exhibition, which was inaugurated a 7 p.m. in the main courtyard of this building, tells the story of UNAM, its contributions to the humanities, science, technology, social, biological, chemical and health sciences as well as its work in cultural dissemination and sport.
The university commemorates its first century on 22 September 2010. Several activities will be organized to mark this event, including a university procession through the streets of the Historic Center, evoking the university a hundred years ago, a solemn session of congress and a concert in Sala Nezahualcóyotl by the UNAM Philharmonic Orchestra.
On 23 September, in Palacio de Minería, Honorary Doctorates will be awarded to 16 national and international personalities for their contribution to science, the humanities, art and culture.
The National University of Mexico, the successor to the Real Universidad de México, founded in 1551, was inaugurated on 22 September 1910 to mark the centenary of the Start of the Fight for Independence, following an agreement by Professor Justo Sierra to create a new lay institution that adhered to the scientific method.
The University Time exhibition seeks to show both the activity and the various facets of the academic structure and history of the National University of Mexico. It will also display its wide range of objects, consisting of documents, books, paintings, objects, trophies, fragments of films, documents, photographs, sculptures, records and so on. Through them, visitors to the exhibition will be able to appreciate the various contributions UNAM made to Mexico throughout the 20th century.
The exhibition shows the thoughts of the founders, the evolution of the War of the Revolution; the efforts to pacify society; the major social movements, the creation of Ciudad Universitaria, one of the landmarks in the country's history; the efforts made in scientific and humanistic research and how a cultural dissemination project was consolidated that gave rise to the great artistic movements of the last century.
The aim of University Time is to make every university student feel proud of belonging to this institution. It is also designed to make those unfamiliar with UNAM aware of its essence and above all, to show all Mexicans that UNAM is a national project of which we can feel proud.
