AMLO and PRD Split Over Alliances The News go to original October 11, 2010
| López Obrador to back a leftist candidate in Edomex | | Mexico City – Late last week Andrés Manuel López Obrador, aka AMLO, confirmed that he will ask for a leave from the ranks of the Democratic Revolution Party (PRD) after the party announced the formation of an alliance with the National Action Party (PAN) in the upcoming 2011 elections in the State of Mexico, or Edomex.
During a rally in the municipal public square of Nezahualcóyotl, López Obrador reassured his followers that he is not going to leave the party for good. “The people leaving here are them,” he said, referring to the head of the PRD, Jesús Ortega and the PRD members who support this alliance. During his speech, the former presidential candidate deemed this alliance an act of treachery and he spoke out against the decision that the PRD’s council in the State of Mexico took and added: “you can all take a flying leap.”
He further explained that his movement will promote its own candidate by means of a coalition with the Labor Party (PT), the Convergence Party, and members of the PRD who can relate to his ideals. He reminded the audience of what happened in 1996 when he managed to position himself in the highest ranks of the PRD.
There, he supported many PRD members who are now in the ranks of the PAN and occupy prominent posts. He reiterated his rejection of this alliance by mentioning that the PAN is a conservative party that has historically been opposed to the ideals the PRD and has never taken into account the needs of the vulnerable sectors of society. He stated that this breaking-off with the PRD will not affect a possible alliance with left wing parties in order to present a single presidential candidate for the upcoming elections.
He expects this candidacy to start from scratch so that it can be fashioned into the ideals of the party. According to López Obrador, the people who support his ideals will be duly recognized. His party will give those supporting him a badge or a specific sign that will boast of their affiliation with López Obrador. He will continue with his rallies in several other municipalities including Chalco and Ixtapaluca.
