San Miguel de Allende – One year after she took office, Municipal Mayor Lucy Nuñez says she’s achieved a top objective: making the people’s participation in politics a reality. Last week Nuñez swore in the elected officials of 27 neighborhood committees with which she hopes to change the face of municipal politics forever.

“The difference now is that they were all democratically elected,” she says, reminiscing that in the past municipal mayors appointed what she calls “political operators” who “manipulated” neighborhood organizations for their own gain. She also swore in the leaders of 79 community councils spread out in the colonias and housing developments.

“The challenge now is to make the committees and councils function well. These neighborhood representatives must motivate their neighbors to implement teamwork in order to benefit their neighborhoods and communities.”

Mayor Nuñez says that she has also enticed the foreign resident community into forming their own committees to solve problems pertinent to them, “as they too live here and are not separate from the rest of us.” In fact, she says the foreign resident community has already formed a security committee through which they can keep an eye on each other’s properties, as well as have direct contact with the police for help when needed.

“The political integration of San Miguel is now inclusive with responsible representatives activated and ready to motivate and help,” Mayor Nuñez said.
