“The Bicentennial Olympic Festival is also an unusual celebration. It is a major display that will clearly express all the values we can see and want in sport, the values of peace, we long for, of brotherhood, respect, understanding, harmony, competition and happiness, particularly in a year in which Mexicans are pleased about what we have achieved to day and hopeful about what we want to be," he said.
At the foot of the Monument to the Angel of Independence, the President explained that in this Festival, which will be in Reform Avenue until 17 October, there will be sports persons from 31 Olympic and nine Paralympic disciplines.
Another 17 special events will also be held at different sites around the country during Sports Week. He therefore invited families to attend this mass event and see the finest examples of Mexican sport.
“We will have wonderful sports displays and disseminate the work, culture and love of sport. These exhibitions will be open to the public. Thousands of children and young people will be able to participate with athletes in disciplines such as athletics, boxing, diving, gym, weight-lifting, Tae Kwon Do, archery, Pentathlon and beach volleyball.
We are going to hold a Bicentennial Olympic Festival, an unforgettable national celebration, a celebration of brotherhood, solidarity and the joy of sports," he said.
Accompanied by his family, President Calderón invited Mexican children and youth to be like our athletes: competitive and disciplined and to pursue victory with passion and dedication, without respect for others and a team spirit.
The President also highlighted the emphasis Federal Government places on promoting sport at a national level since, he said, sport entails health, discipline and personal achievement.
“In this Year of the Fatherland, I invite you all to continue building a different Mexico, and to use sport to construct a winning, powerful Mexico that will match our hopes and dreams. A Mexico where people can really live better,” he explained.
During the event, the person responsible for lighting the Olympic Flame was Olympic Tae Kwon Do champion María Rosario Espinoza while divers Paola Espinosa and Rommel Pacheco gave a diving exhibition.
